WHO ARE WE?

The Food Justice Forum engages in a variety of activities and programs designed to advance our mission OF tackling food insecurity and food waste:

1. POLICY AND ADVOCACY

  • The Food Justice Forum actively engages with policymakers to promote legislative reforms that address food insecurity and waste. Our advocacy efforts are grounded in rigorous research and data analysis, ensuring that our recommendations are both practical and impactful.

  • We highlight the gaps in Bermuda's current legislative framework, including the need for updates to the Public Health and Safety (PH&S) regulations and the Samaritan Act, which presently lacks sufficient guidance on food redistribution and waste management.

2. RESEARCH AND DATA ANALYSIS

  • Our work is informed by comprehensive research that identifies the root causes of food insecurity and inefficiency in Bermuda. This includes the analysis of PESTEL (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, and Legal) factors that influence food security on the island.

  • For instance, Bermuda's economy is characterised by high costs of goods and services, Bermuda’s geo-location, and a reliance on imported food, all of which contribute to the complexities of food distribution and waste management.

3. COMMUNICATIONS AND OUTREACH

The Food Justice Forum conducts community outreach and communications through a multifaceted approach that includes public awareness campaigns, educational workshops, and collaborative events such as the Food Justice Forum itself, the Zero Waste Challenge, and the Donate a Dinner campaign. These initiatives are designed to engage the community, raise awareness about food insecurity, and encourage participation in sustainable practices. By using both traditional and digital media, including social media platforms and local partnerships, the Forum effectively disseminates its message and mobilizes support. This outreach ensures that the Forum’s goals of reducing food waste, improving food distribution, and fostering policy change are communicated clearly and widely, driving collective action towards a more equitable food system in Bermuda.
